Maggie’s, a charity providing practical, emotional and social support for people living with cancer, were supplied with a new site at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. The location was chosen specifically to provide additional onsite support to Barts own world class cancer care facilities. Located on the main square opposite the Barts cancer wing, the Maggie’s site is close to the oncology ward with easy access to the main hospital entrance. A key consideration of this site was the need to be close to the hospitals existing cancer centre whilst preserving the heritage of a number of surrounding buildings and spaces.

Project Objective

To deliver a unique and inspiring building and garden for cancer patients that supports the existing Barts world class cancer centre and respects the heritage location.

Role of DP9

DP9 led the project from concept stage, through the pre-application process to submission and approval of the application, with subsequent amendments and discharge of planning conditions. Devising the planning strategy and negotiating with key stakeholders, the local authority and Historic England were all key.

Key Challenge

The proposals affected a number of heritage assets including the adjacent Grade I listed North Wing that attracted a great deal of attention including some high-profile objectors. Therefore, to ensure the impact on these assets was acceptable by the decision maker, the proposals were revised during the course of determination to provide new facilities for the North Wing to help secure its long-term viable use.
