Brighton Marina
Brighton Marina has long been seen as a rather lacklustre facility, unworthy of the aspirations of the South Coast resort. Recent improvements have strengthened the Marina's profile but the site still falls short of its full potential. This project was designed to inject new life and investment, making it a major attraction in its own right.
The mix of uses includes 853 residential units in 11 blocks, plus smaller areas of commercial and community space including accommodation for a yacht club and a new lifeboat station. The most controversial element of the scheme was the 40-storey landmark tower, equipped with a public viewing gallery. Despite support from English Heritage and CABE, the project was not supported initially by the local authority. An intensive period of redesign followed, with the mass of the scheme reduced and the area of public space increased. This led to approval of the revised submission in summer 2006.
