Silvertown Quays
The site for the Silvertown Quays development is located close to the Thames Barrier and the adjacent public park. Newham Council and the GLA were keen to see the area developed to provide a new focus for the Royal Docks. The masterplan was developed by Urban Strategies and provides for around 5000 residential units, 52,000sq.m of commercial floorspace, community facilities and an aquarium, a major visitor attraction designed by Terry Farrell.
Outline planning permission was obtained and the masterplan will be realised over 10-15 years. The complex planning issues around the project included height (given the proximity of London City Airport), the balance of uses, the overall quantum of development and the provision of transport links. Residential units include an affordable element, agreed in negotiations with Newham and the Mayor of London.
